Samora Smallwood is a classically trained, bilingual Actress, Writer, & Cool Feminist. She is Co-Chair of ACTRA's Diversity Committee as well as the founder of The Actors Work Studio, an innovative acting studio in Toronto. Samora's recent on-screen work includes Star Trek, The Expanse, American Gods, Coroner, The Shelter, and Shadowhunter. Samora's passion is telling fresh stories and promoting diversity on-screen and behind the camera. She was recently a jury member for The Female Eye Film Festival as well as a selected participant in The Reelworld Film Festival's "Emerging 20" Talent to Watch Program. Samora is also a passionate public speaker whose recent work includes hosting panels at TIFF, The Toronto Black Film Festival, Official International Women’s Day & ACTRA Toronto.

Up-Close Conversation with Andy Robertshaw

With an astounding list of film credits as a military historian this conversation will be fascinating to both film lovers and military buffs. Andy has worked on Dunkirk (Christopher Nolan), War Horse (Steven Speilburg) , Wonder Woman (Patty Jenkins), They Shall Not Grow Old (Peter Jackson) and most recently the Academy Award winning film 1917 (Sam Mendes) Andy works from script through productions with costumes, props, actors to create realistic film about these dramatic historical events.

Speaker

Andy Robertshaw is a military historian and media consultant. A freelance military historian, author and broadcaster who has specialised in the study of the two world wars Andy is currently working on a project for Twickenham Studios that will compete later this year. He was previously a Museum Director for the MOD and before that Head of Education and Events at the National Army Museum in London. He runs a replica World War One trench in Sussex which has been featured in a variety of television and film projects and for which he provided advice, uniformed extras and props. Andy’s business, Battlefield Partnerships Ltd, provides military props and original items for prop houses and consultations on film projects. He was Military Consultant War Horse and was on location throughout the filming. In the period before filming started he was consulted on the screenplay and worked with Richard Curtis. For ‘1917’ he was also costume, prop and Set Dec consultant. This very successful experience demonstrated his ability to balance historical accuracy with the needs of a production. He works with actors, extras and crew, provides historical background, and motives for actors and extras that are unfamiliar with military history or the period being portrayed.

Master composer Ryner Stoetzer breaks down the entire process of scoring a film from inception to delivery with priceless insights from other professionals representing every discipline key to a successful collaboration with producers, directors, editors.

Ryner Stoetzer is a prolific and diversified composer, sound recording engineer, and producer, who has composed original score, for more than 800 episodes of over 30 television series, 160+ tv commercials, dramatic films, investigative docuseries, tv specials, music for ballet, modern dance, dressage, and synchronized swimming, as well as for album tracks for a variety of recording artists. Celebrating 26 years in business in 2019, Ryner’s music was selected to underscored a T-Mobile Superbowl ad featuring Justin Bieber, and shows such as Saturday Night Live, The Late Late Show With James Corden, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, America's Most Wanted, Access Hollywood, Portlandia and many more. Ryner won the Top Indie Film Award for "Best Music” for his original score and sound design in "The One I Adore" by Jason Seelman. A career highlight for Ryner was to work with Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue to edit, record, and arrange the music for Scott and Tessa’s Olympic Gold Medal ice dance win in the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. Ryner is a Director of the Board of the Screen Composers Guild of Canada, and is part of a national group of creators coordinating their efforts to update copyright legislation in Canada to properly reflect compensation models adopted by the USA and the EU.

Janal Bechthold (Music Composer) is a composer for film, TV, games, and interactive media, having worked on numerous scores including horror noir feature “Art of Obsession”, documentary “Gods In Shackles”, videogame “The Rival Books of Aster”, and interactive graphic novels, “Dystopia 2153” and “80 Degrees North”. Janal is currently the 2nd Vice President of the Screen Composers Guild of Canada, serves on the Board of Directors of the SOCAN Foundation, and spearheaded the research report, “Gender in the Canadian Screen Composing Industry”. Janal is attending the Forest City Film Festival with the film “Night Shoot” directed by Penny Eizenga, starring Canadian icons: Gordon Pinsent and Sheila McCarthy.

Spencer Creaghan (Composer) is a Multi-Award-winning Film & Modern Media Composer and alumni of the Canadian Film Centre’s prestigious Slaight Family Music Lab. He is most known for his music to the acclaimed series’ “Teenagers” and “All For One”; the thrilling dark-comedy, “Nobody Famous”; and the Jean-Claude Van Damme & Dolph Lundgren action thriller “Black Water”. He provides synth design, production, additional music, and programming work as assistant to esteemed Canadian composer Lesley Barber, most recently contributing to the Amazon Studios upcoming comedy “Late Night”, the Netflix romantic comedy “Irreplaceable You”, and the upcoming political thriller “American Woman”, starring Sarah Gadon.

Aly Kelly is a senior producer with Canadian production company, Hodgee Films. She has produced “Who Let the Dogs Out” (Telus, 2019), “Robot Fan Cave” (ESPN, 2019), “Freaks & Geeks: The Documentary” (A&E, 2018), “Pharma Bro” (Blumhouse Productions, unreleased), and has lent production support on projects with Spike Lee, Uber, Samsung, TSN, DHX and Insight Productions. All of her work is rooted in her passion to help filmmakers realize their vision.

Web content specialist Adam Caplan is back with several creators whose projects are finding success outside of the traditional distribution model. Hear stories of innovation and determination that will help you decide if the web is right for your project too.

Adam Caplan (Producer/director, web.isod.es) is Founder of web.isod.es, a London, Ontario-based Story Studio that creates authentic stories for social and interactive experiences. Previously, Adam was Creative Director at Cineplex Digital Networks, Executive Site Producer at hsn.com, and has lectured on e-commerce strategy at Western University for over a decade. Prior to that, Adam worked in emerging media in Los Angeles, California. Adam currently serves on the Board of the Ontario Creates (OMDC) and its Audit and Strategic Planning Committees; he is also chair of the Screen Based Industries Strategic Working Group for the City of London, and served as a member of London’s 2019 JUNOS Host Committee.

Mariah Owen (CEO, GTE Productions) Mariah Owen is an award-winning actress and filmmaker from Toronto. She founded her production company, GTE Productions, at the age of 21 She currently serves as CEO of GTE while being named the 2019 Executive Producer of T.O. Webfest; an international festival for digital content that highlights web series and podcasts held at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. The emerging powerhouse has been called a “tour de force from the indie film industry” (Broadway World) and “one of Canada’s most impressive young producers” (Indiescreen)

Rodney V. Smith (President at Webseries Creators of Canada) describes himself as a webseries evangelist and is heavily involved in the webseries movement in Toronto and New York City. He is one of the founding members of the Independent Webseries Creators of Canada (IWCC) and currently serves as its President. He developed and filmed his first feature film “Mort” in 2002. He became actively involved with the online forum DVXUser, creating several short films in online competitions and eventually the critically acclaimed webseries “Dominion”. Smith recently released the epic 15 episode science-fiction webseries “Out Of Time” on Amazon Prime and is the author of the novels “So You Might Be A Vampire” and “So You Used To Be Human”. He is currently working on his third novel and a feature film adaptation of his first novel, “So You Might Be A Vampire”.

In her latest position of VP of Marketing and Acquisitions at A71 and V71 Susan continues to be a champion of new talent, enjoying the energy and ingenuity of the creative people she meets in the independent film community while successfully bringing their projects to the marketplace.

Graig Thompson - Documentary Filmmaker and Executive Producer. President and Executive Producer, Ballinran Entertainment. Craig has 25 years’ experience in content creation, production and management, and more than a decade as a working journalist (CBC, CBC Radio (England), CTV). Founder, DocFest Stratford and No Boundaries. Author, acclaimed public speaker, and experienced educator, committed to inspiring the next generation of media professionals. Recent feature documentary credits: “Game Changers” (2017), “The Truth is in the Stars” (2017), “Mostly Sunny” (2016) “Chaos on the Bridge” (2014).

Paige Murray - CBC-Development Manager, Comedy and Drama and Canadian Reflections Programmer. She has worked at the CBC for over eight years within the content areas and is currently the Development Manager, Comedy and Drama for CBC English Television. As the key point of contact for comedy and drama submissions, Paige actively looks for new talent and projects and evaluates series pitches to fulfill CBC’s programming needs. Paige is also the programmer for Canadian Reflections, the longest running Canadian short film showcase on national broadcast television. Paige currently sits as Vice Chair of the Breakthroughs Film Festival Board.

Greg Jeffs - an NSI Features First alumni, has written and produced short films that have been broadcast, released theatrically and are available on iTunes. His short film, THE HUNT, was named the best short film of 2013 by RUE MORGUE MAGAZINE. His directorial debut, IT’S ALL IN YOUR HEAD premiered at the 2016 Horror Channel Fright Fest and continues to tour the worldwide festival circuit. Through his work with William F. White he helps new talent learn the industry procedures and develop a plan for their project that will help maximize the results.

Panelists:

Shelly Quade, Manager of Programs and Development at NSI. She helps coordinate National Screen Institute Features First and all TELUS STORYHIVE editions. She takes great pride in her role as facilitator, guide and friend to her teams. Her interest in script reading, clearances and proofreading has brought even more enjoyment to her job. Shelly came to NSI from Frantic Films where she used her research skills to delve into all areas of scripted and unscripted development. Considered a people person, it was a useful skill to have when casting developing show ideas.

Kelly Payne, Film Development, Ontario Creates. Ontario Creates supports the Province of Ontario’s creative economy by providing innovative programs, services and funding for the film & television; book & magazine publishing; interactive digital media & music industries. Penny Eizenga, Film Director. She is an alumnus of Women in the Director’s Chair, with the feature screenplay “A Far Cry”, co-written with Gordon Pinsent. Filming planned for spring 2021. Penny directed and produced several award-winning short films and the feature, “Go Fish” and 20 concept television pilots in collaboration with The Incubator Studio. She produced a 21-episode digital series called “The Giant Comes Out”, which screened at the LA Comedy Fest. Her feature screenplay, “Put Your Lips On”, is currently in development with a UK-based production company.

Cornelia Principe, Documentary Film Producer. She is an Emmy-nominated, award-winning producer with over 20 years of experience. Currently releasing Matt Gallagher’s “Prey” (2019), she recently produced “14 & Muslim” (2018) and is in post-production on the documentary “Send Us Your Brother” with director Nisha Pahuja. Other credits include: the award-winning documentary “The World Before Her“ (2012); “Grinders” (2011); and the 2008 Gemini award-winning documentary series “Diamond Road”.

Luke Villemaire, Emerging Filmmaker. He is a Kitchener-born filmmaker, currently based in Toronto, ON. From a young age, he has cultivated a curiosity and passion for the art of storytelling. He’s currently in post-production for his first feature film, “Goliath”, which he wrote, directed and produced on a budget of approx. $200,000— all while earning his BFA at Ryerson University.

Taisa Dekker - Industry Relations ACTRA. She began her career in the film business as a teenager in her home city of Calgary. After finishing post-secondary studies, she joined the staff at ACTRA Alberta. Eventually, Taisa relocated to Toronto to work with ACTRA Performers’ Rights Society, followed by the film department at ACTRA Toronto before being promoted to Industry Relations. Ms. Dekker is passionate about the industry and in her role, she promotes engaging union performers to producers of various types of content.

Sara Kay & Jenny Lewis - LewisKay Casting. Jenny Lewis and Sara Kay have been in business together for just over 16 years. Their full service Casting Company started small, focusing on indie films, short films and even some reality casting. Their mandate is to think outside the box and approach each project with creative integrity. After over a decade together and three CSA awards, they are firmly entrenched in both the Canadian and American Casting scene. In 2018, the majority of their work was on indie films and working with up and coming filmmakers, but they also continue to spend a lot of time on their series and feature film work. Recent credits include “The Boys”, “KIN”, “Letterkenny”, “Stardust”, “Share”, “What We do In the Shadows” and “Polar”, to name a few.

Emma Laird (Agent at Gary Goddard Agency). Working as one of the elite talent agents with GGA, a prestigious boutique agency that is well-known as a home for many of Canada’s top actors, writers and directors. Since its inception, GGA’s mandate is to work with a select number of exceptional artists to develop and nurture their careers in the spirit of partnership.

Paige Murray (CBC- Development Manager, Comedy and Drama and Canadian Reflections Programmer). She has worked at the CBC for over eight years within the content areas and is currently the Development Manager, Comedy and Drama for CBC English Television. As the key point of contact for comedy and drama submissions, Paige actively looks for new talent and projects and evaluates series pitches to fulfill CBC’s programming needs. Paige is also the programmer for Canadian Reflections, the longest running Canadian short film showcase on national broadcast television. Paige currently sits as Vice Chair of the Breakthroughs Film Festival Board.

Greg Jeffs (Client Service Coordinator William F White International). An NSI Features First alumni, has written and produced short films that have been broadcast, released theatrically and are available on iTunes. His short film, “The Hunt”, was named the best short film of 2013 by RUE MORGUE MAGAZINE. His directorial debut, “It's All In Your Head” premiered at the 2016 Horror Channel Fright Fest and continues to tour the worldwide festival circuit. Through his work with William F. White he helps new talent learn the industry procedures and develop a plan for their project that will help maximize the results.

Shelly Quade (Manager of Programs and Development, National Screen Institute). She helps coordinate NSI Features First and all TELUS STORYHIVE editions. She takes great pride in her role as facilitator, guide and friend to her teams. Her interest in script reading, clearances and proofreading has brought even more enjoyment to her job. Shelly came to NSI from Frantic Films where she used her research skills to delve into all areas of scripted and unscripted development. Considered a people person, it was a useful skill to have when casting developing show ideas.

Maria Alexopoulos (Director and Producer). Maria launched the video division for social media giant Diply, where she was the Director of Video for over four years. Her time there oversaw the creation of online channels; Crafty, Delicious and Flawless, having collectively garned over 16 million followers and 500 million video views. Prior to her time at Diply she directed the feature documentary, “Nepal In the Mountains Shadow”, which premiered and won best international documentary at the Swansea Bay International Film Festival, she then went onto to produce independent feature films “Liminality” and “Backtrack”.

Moderator - Dorothy Downs (Executive Director, FCFF) With a background as a producer and in marketing and communications Downs has created and produced seven internationally aired and award-winning TV series with her company Spellbound Productions. She has enthusiastically supported the film industry in the area for the past 20 years in many different capacities both in front of the camera and in many roles behind the camera. She conceived of, built and continues to build the FCFF.

Shannon Walsh - writer and director of the feature documentaries Jeppe on a Friday (RIDM 2013), À st-henri, le 26 août (Hot Docs 2011), and H2Oil (Hot Docs 2009). She recently premiered her first nonfiction VR, Disappearance: Hong Kong Stories (RIDM 2018), and finished a short doc, Matsutake Hunters (AmDocs 2019), for TELUS Originals. Her work has been theatrically released in Canada, the UK and South Africa, and broadcast on Al-Jazeera, CBC, Discovery channel, Netflix and other stations internationally. Her work has screened in over 60 film festivals such as Hot Docs, Visions du Réel, La Rochelle, Full Frame, Rome, and Beijing, as well as in museums including the Pompidou Centre in Paris. She is an assistant professor of film production at the University of British Columbia.

Craig Thompson - President and Executive Producer, Ballinran Entertainment. Craig has 25 years’ experience in content creation, production and management, and more than a decade as a working journalist (CBC, CBC Radio (England), CTV). Specialties: Film and television production management, event management, financing, strategic and business consulting in the media industry. Founder, DocFest Stratford and No Boundaries. Author, acclaimed public speaker, and experienced educator, committed to inspiring the next generation of media professionals. Recent feature documentary credits: Game Changers (2017), The Truth is in the Stars (2017), Mostly Sunny (2016) Chaos on the Bridge (2014).

Christy Garland - Christy’s films reveal compelling, intimate stories that combine observational documentary with strong dramatic development and universally felt themes. Her feature What Walaa Wants was chosen as one of TIFF Canada’s Top Ten 2018, and was nominated for 3 Canadian Screen Awards. The Globe and Mail called it the “unexpectedly thrilling coming-of-age documentary of the year”. After a world premiere at the Berlinale 2018, where it was shortlisted for the Glashütte Original Award, and the Amnesty Film Award, it has won the Margaret Mead Filmmaker Award, the Special Jury Award at Hot Docs, the Hilal Best Feature Award at the Doha Film Institute’s Ajyal Film Festival and Best Documentary at the Forest City Film Festival in her hometown of London, Ontario in 2018. It was also nominated for the DGC Allan King Award for Excellence in Documentary. Based in Toronto, she often co‐produces with the Nordic countries. The Bastard Sings The Sweetest Song (2012, Hot Docs, Sheffield) garnered rave reviews at its theatrical release, “echoing the work of Bresson and the Dardennes” (Globe & Mail). Cheer Up (2016, HotDocs, DOC NYC) was called“a biting portrait of young womanhood” by iD/Vice. Christy is an alumni of Ryerson, Binger Film Lab (Amsterdam) and DOK Incubator (Prague).

Moderator - Samora Smallwood, a bilingual Actress, Writer, & Cool Feminist. She is also co-chair of ACTRA’s Diversity Committee as well as an ACTRA Toronto Councillor. Samora’s recent on-screen work includes Star Trek, The Expanse, American Gods, The Coroner, The Shelter, Shadowhunters, and Frankie Drake Mysteries in a story about white passing & black identity in Canada. Samora’s passion is telling fresh stories and promoting diversity on-screen and behind the camera. She is the founder of The Actors Work Studio, an innovative acting studio in Toronto and was recently a jury member for The Female Eye Film Festival as well as a selected participant in The Reelworld Film Festival’s “Emerging 20 Program”.

Panelists:

Penny Eizenga - filmmaker. Penny is an alumnus of Women in the Director’s Chair, with the feature screenplay A Far Cry, co-written with Gordon Pinsent. Filming planned for spring 2021.
Penny directed and produced several award-winning short films and the feature, Go Fish and 20 concept television pilots in collaboration with The Incubator Studio. She produced a 21-episode digital series called The Giant Comes Out, which screened at the LA Comedy Fest. Her feature screenplay, Put Your Lips On, is currently in development with a UK-based production company.

Dylan Mitro - filmmaker. Dylan Mitro is a 23-year-old Toronto-based writer/director. He focuses most of his filmmaking on queer and gender positive representation, told through heavily stylized absurd narratives. His credits include 6 music videos for artists including The Zolas and Kendal Thompson. That Funeral Glow is his largest project to date. He hopes to use his filmmaking to help younger artists in the LGBTQ community find their voice.

Nyla Innuksuk - filmmaker. Nyla Innuksuk is the founder of Mixtape VR which produces Virtual and Augmented Reality content. A writer for Marvel Comics, Innuksuk co-created the character of Snowguard, a teenage superhero from Pangnirtung, Nunavut and a member of Marvel’s Champions League. Working in mixed media allows Nyla to channel her passions for technology and genre storytelling among mediums that include interactive graphic novels, film, television and synthetic experiences. Originally from Igloolik, Nunavut, Innuksuk studied film at Ryerson University before working as a producer at the Aboriginally owned and operated Big Soul Productions. She then went on to found Pinnguaq VR before establishing her own company in Mixtape. In addition to her film and digital work, Nyla sits on the board of directors of Ontario Creates (formerly the OMDC) and the Glenn Gould Foundation. She was recently selected by Google to be included in their exclusive Google Jump program, is an ambassador for the Northern Indigenous Film Fund in Norway and was the 2018 imagineNATIVE artist in residence.

Richard Young - Screenwriter & Actor. Of South Asian (Indo-Caribbean) background, Richard is a both a Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) member and the ACTRA Toronto Treasurer. Besides writing the Caribbean-Canadian short Maternal (screening at this festival), he wrote for the multicultural television cartoon 16 Hudson (TVO) and co-created/wrote the Chinese-Canadian digital series Sudden Master (OMNI/Rogers). Kandu Attitude, the South Asian-Canadian sitcom pilot he co-wrote, was a Pitch Finalist in Just For Laughs ComedyPRO, a Quarter Finalist in the Final Draft Big Break Screenwriting Contest, and a WGC Diversity Script of the Month selection. Richard’s acting credits include Jett (Cinemax), Taken (NBC), Kim's Convenience (Netflix-CBC), Endlings (Hulu-CBC), Incorporated (SyFy) and The Strain (FX). Additionally, Richard co-spearheaded the Ontario ACTRA Census, an Ontario Creates-funded research project that assessed Ontario screen performer demographics as well as wage and opportunity gaps.

Join Michael Jari Davidson (SUPERGRID, FIRST ROUND DOWN) as he outlines the role and responsibilities of a cinematographer and then leads a fascinating conversation with a working Director, Producer and D.O.P. on how those positions should work together as an effective team.

Moderator - Cinematographer Michael Jari Davidson is a graduate of Western University, as well as the Detroit Film Center. Michael sits on the President’s Committee of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers and is a Director of Photography member of I.A.T.S.E. 667, The International Cinematographers Guild. Michael’s films include the action adventure SUPERGRID, the action comedy FIRST ROUND DOWN, the critically acclaimed, multiple award winning films HEIR and FAMILIAR and many more. His camera for music videos include Dear Rouge (Universal), Buck 65 (Warner), Tegan and Sarah (Universal), Alice in Chains (Capitol), The Afters (Columbia), as well as D-Sisive (URBNet).

Panelists:

Alan Poon, CSC is a cinematographer based out of Toronto, Canada. He has shot wide range of projects including narrative films, documentaries and commercials all over the world. In 2018, Variety magazine named POON as one of 10 Cinematographers to Watch, after shooting the film KODACHROME starring Ed Harris, Jason Sudeikis and Elizabeth Olsen. The film was shot on 35mm film and was quickly picked up by Netflix after premiering at TIFF in 2017. Most recently Alan has filmed the soon-to-be-released Netflix Original film AWAKE, directed by frequent collaborator Mark Raso, starring Gina Rodriguez, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Barry Pepper.

Greg Sager - Director. He has had the opportunity to be a part of a wide range of projects, including television commercials, features, short films, corporate, infomercials and music videos in various production roles for the past 20 years. Greg has been worked on projects for companies such as Rogers Television, Nyrstar Entertainment, Chorus, CBC, CityTV, Somerville Entertainment and Omni Television to name a few. He is part of Matchbox Pictures, where he produce, write and direct feature films like "Gray Matter", Kingdome Come" and "Devil Seed".

Kristina Esposito (Producer). A producer with her company KEME Productions. As co-owner of KEME productions, she has produced award-winning content that has screened across North America. She was one of Reel World Film Festival’s Emerging 20 with her short Captive Love. The film premiered at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on opening night of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival and screened at the Forest City Film Festival. She also conceptualized and produced Virtual Hitman, which screened at a number of festivals including Philadelphia Comic Con, FanExpo, and the Vancouver Asian Film Festival where it won Best Canadian Short. As an independent producer she produced IRL The Series, which premiered on Bell Media’s FibeTV1. In 2017 she worked as associate producer on the Telefilm funded feature Becoming Burlesque starring Shiva Negar and directed by Jackie English. This past fall Kristina produced her first feature film, Viscous in upstate New York starring Mena Suvari, and Trey Tucker. The film is slated to come out in 2020. Kristina is currently developing a number of projects across the continent, telling universal stories in a different light.
