- each person is given a clean swim cap to wear inside the machine, which is washed at high temperatures between uses
- hand sanitizer and hand washing stations are available for use
- a mask is worn by our technician while operating the machine and performing your test
- MANDATORY MASK REQUIREMENT: Face masks are now required to enter all indoor/enclosed spaces in London, ON, as per the Middlesex London Public Health Unit announcement. Please ensure you arrive wearing a face mask / face covering that meets the criteria listed on the MLHU website: https://www.healthunit.com/news/mandatory-face-covering-Instruction-issued Face masks can be safely worn inside the BOD POD machine, and they will not impact your body composition reading

TESTING EQUIPMENT:
BOD POD (Whole-Body Air-Displacement Plethysmography). Highly accurate body composition testing machinery with excellent repeatability – used as the gold standard in research facilities.
APPOINTMENT LENGTH:
15 minutes
WHAT TO WEAR:
The BOD POD uses air displacement inside a controlled chamber to get an accurate reading of your body volume, so wearing tight-fitting spandex clothing yields best results.
- Females: should wear a Spandex/Speedo-type bathing suit or spandex shorts/leggings and a sports bra
- Males: should wear either compression shorts, boxer-brief underwear, or spandex/tight-fitting clothing
- Long Hair: please bring a hair elastic to pull back long hair and tie into a ponytail or bun
- Other Comments: Tight-fitting clothing is best for accurate test results. The room will be very private and you will not be in front of anyone else but the BOD POD technician performing the test while you sit in the BOD POD chamber. A private changing room is available on-site. The BOD POD uses air, not water, to collect the measurement so you will not get wet during this test.
JEWELRY / METAL:
- Removable Jewelry: please remove all jewelry and leave at home, since you will be asked to remove it for the test and we wouldn’t want you to lose your valuables
- Permanent Piercings: do not need to be taken out if they are difficult to remove from your body
- Metal Plates / Screws / Internal Devices: there is no danger of wearing any metal inside the BOD POD chamber
DAY OF YOUR TEST:
- Exercise: AVOID strenuous, sweaty exercise in the 2-hours prior (light exercise is ok)
- Food: AVOID a large, heavy, high-fat meal in the 2-hours prior (a small snack or light meal is ok)
- Alcohol: AVOID excessive alcohol consumption
- Water: Ensure that you are well-hydrated (but not overhydrated) for best results
Body composition testing can be a very useful piece of information to active individuals to help you understand your lean body mass, fat mass, and body fat percentage. Knowing your numbers can help you determine if weight loss is an appropriate goal for performance enhancement, and how many pounds of fat can be safely lost without jeopardizing health by cutting into your essential fat stores. As a guide, body fat percentage differs for men and women with different cut-off values for health:
Classification | Males | Females |
---|---|---|
Risky (high body fat) | > 30% | > 40% |
Excessive Fat | 21-30% | 31-40% |
Moderately Lean | 13-20% | 23-30% |
Lean | 9-12% | 19-22% |
Ultra Lean | 5-8% | 15-18% |
Risky (low body fat) | < 5% | < 15% |
